Through its unique platform, the WCM is able to tackle trauma at an individual level for both participants, whose personal stories and objects comprise the museum’s collection, and visitors – ultimately contributing to greater understanding for society on whole. Its first permanent exhibition opened in January 2017, seven years after the project’s beginnings, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Having proven successful in providing Bosnians of all ages with a rare opportunity to confront the traumas of their recent past without reinforcing ethnic boundaries, the WCM has expanded its activities to contemporary conflict, post-conflict, and resettlement zones. With projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Lebanon, Ukraine and the United States, the WCM is becoming an international platform that gives voice to current and former war children. Its quick growth aggregated a lot of attention and facilitated collaboration between the WCM and some of the world’s leading universities. The War Childhood Museum has also had the privilege of presenting at the largest peace-building, youth, and museum conferences. Its efforts have received media coverage from New York City to Tokyo. The 2018 Council of Europe Museum Prize â€“ one of the most prestigious awards in the museum industry – was awarded to the War Childhood Museum as part of the European Museum of the Year Awards. Follow us on Facebook for up to date information: www.facebook.com/warchildhoodmuseum What are we collecting? Personal Belongings Everyone has an item that reminds them of their childhood; so do people whose childhoods were affected by war. The War Childhood Museum collects artifacts, from favorite books and an improvised dress to toys, that war survivors have saved to this day. For us, even more important and valuable than the items themselves are the personal experiences of their owners. This is why every item is accompanied by a unique personal story. Video Testimonies In addition to collecting wartime memorabilia, the War Childhood Museum is also setting up an archive containing the audio and video testimonies of project participants. They include remembrances on everyday life as a child in war, including: family life, housing, living conditions, proximate danger, experience with shelling and sniper fire, experience of displacement and life as a refugee, schooling, play and games, friendships, leisure time, health, wounding, and significant losses during the wartime. WAS YOUR CHILDHOOD AFFECTED BY WAR? CONTRIBUTE YOUR MEMORIES TO THE WCM. Research Once we have collected more than 3,000 items from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and filmed over 200 hours of video testimonies, we have expanded our work by documenting the experience of war childhood in other countries as well. Today, our collection includes stories from the Second World War, Syrian Civil War, War in Afghanistan, War in Donbass, and other conflicts. Our goal for the next ten years is to create the world’s largest collection dedicated to the experience of childhood affected by war. Exhibition After several temporary exhibitions in 2016, the War Childhood Museum opened doors of its first permanent exhibition in January 2017 in the historical heart of Sarajevo. The Museum organizes pop-up, travelling and thematic exhibitions as well and exhibits in other museums and galleries around the world. Besides its permanent exhibition, the War Childhood Museum also exhibits through its social media, web site, mobile app, and other media. Education The War Childhood Museum has developed and is implementing educational activities with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of providing a peaceful world for future generations. In addition to hosting school visits at the Museum, our staff holds workshops, and works closely with teachers to encourage the use of carefully designed pre- and post- visit materials in classrooms. The War Childhood Museum works with more than 5,000 children annually. I was a refugee, too They were already shooting on the city… One night, dad came home and said, “Tomorrow you are going to the seaside!” I packed my suitcase: bathing suit, sandals, and diary. We are going to the seaside! In the morning my brother, mom, aunt, and I joined the convoy that was leaving the city. We are going to the seaside… Men with black masks stopped the convoy. They held us hostage for three days. Would I ever see the sea again? Two months later, I arrived in the Netherlands, where I have remained. All of my memories are in this suitcase.
